On the 12th of August, Necessary Aid Alliance joined all and sundry across the country to celebrate International youth day. This year’s theme was “Intergenerational Solidarity; Creating a World for All Ages”. This is a day set aside to celebrate our gallant young men and women who are the future of the country and world at large. In the Upper West Region, there was a unity walk by Coalition For Positive Impact (CPI) in partnership with Necessary Aid Alliance, the NYA, CARD Ghana and other youth-based organizations within the Wa Township which ended at the Jubilee Park.
Our Executive Director challenged the youth present not to consider their ages when aspiring for leadership positions because there is evidence from History that, young people can actually be good leaders. He gave examples such as J.J Rawlings who was only in his thirties when he started vying for leadership; Thomas Sankara was also another example that was referred to. He advocated for a constitutional amendment to allow people who are not up to forty years to contest for presidency as opposed to what is stipulated in the current constitution. These are just but a few that our Executive Director spoke about.
According to the United Nations (UN) on this year’s theme, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the world needs to leverage the full potential of all generations. Solidarity across generations is key for sustainable development. We must collaborate to foster successful and equitable intergenerational relations and partnerships to ensure “no one is left behind.” While intergenerational solidarity and concern for future generations is being called for in tackling global issues – with the UN Secretary-General recently putting forward new recommendations on renewed intergenerational solidarity, including in Our Common Agenda – many challenges remain..
